Audio and Windows 2000

Are you sure your computer can produce ANY sound?
When you start Windows, do you hear the startup sound? If you do, then it means you have a speaker, a sound card, sound drivers, and the volume is turned up. In this case, go back to the previous page for the next step.

What to do if you computer does not play a sound when Windows starts.

Step #1
You can go to the Start button and choose "Settings >> Control Panel."

Step #2
Double click on the control panel, "Sounds and Multimedia" to run it.
(Some Windows are configured so that you get another menu popup after you choose "Control Panel." If this is the case, just select "Sounds and Multimedia" from the popup.)

Step #3
Select the first tab, "Sounds" and scroll down to the entry "Start Windows." Click once on it.

Step #4
Right below the scroll box is the word "Name:" and below it is a combo box. Normally, the popup menu will say, "Windows Logon Sound.wav." If it says "[None]," then click on the combo box and locate "Windows Logon Sound.wav" (or at least some sound file).

Step #5
Be sure the "Sound Volume" slider is to the right.
Click the little button with the right-pointing arrow to the right of the combo box. (In the graphic to the left, the cursor is on this button.) That will play the sound you selected in the combo box. If you hear a sound, then you know that your computer at least can play sound.

Thanks for giving out

Thanks for giving out information. It’s really nice and mean full. When you use USB speakers without a sound card, CD audio can only be heard if you enable digital CD audio. If the CD-ROM drive you are using does not support digital CD audio, then you need a sound card with a CD audio cable to hear CD audio.
