Paul wanted their love to abound, not so their love itself would be larger, but so they would be able to discern between what was important in the kingdom of God and what was merely incidental. But how can love make this difference? The answer is that mature love is distinguished by knowledge and discernment. Discernment will point out the way and love will provide the power to take you there.
Life is filled with an inexhaustible supply of decisions. In every case one is preferable to the other. One decision is better than another because it brings you ever closer to what God has in mind. An informed love both directs and empowers the decider. And the end goal, says Paul, is to be “pure and blameless in (εἰς) the day of Christ.”
Informed love leads to the right choice which takes you to the right destination.
